Notable facts about Kirkstall
- Kirkstall Abbey, a daughter house of Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire, was founded by Cistercian monks in the 12th century.
- Historically Kirkstall was an important centre of industry. The large Kirkstall Forge lays claim to being the longest continually used industrial site in Britain. The forge was founded in the 13th Century by the Cistercian Monks of the Abbey and only recently closed.
- The Kirkstall Brewery operated between 1833 and 1983. By 1898 the brewery was producing around 72,000 barrels of beer a year which was sold in Leeds, Yorkshire and beyond.
- Until the late 1970s when it was closed, Kirkstall was dominated by a coal fired power station. The power station was demolished in the early 1980s when there was a general move towards larger power stations away from town, such as Ferrybridge, Eggborough and Drax.
